A CYCLING track from Murwillumbah to Byron Bay will be the first stage of an updated plan for a 130km trail on a disused northern NSW railway line.
The Northern Rivers Rail Trail group say they have been encouraged by the government’s funding of a pilot track in the state’s south — despite their project missing out in the latest round of infrastructure dollars.
NSW Regional Development Minister John Barilaro this week announced funding for a $5 million pilot rail trail further south, saying the northern project, with an estimated cost of $75 million, was not ready to be funded.
Tweed councillor and former mayor Barry Longland met with the department in Sydney this week, saying the group would be directly involved with the southern pilot, with a view to creating a NSW network of rail trails.
“The funding of the other project doesn’t mean our proposal is deceased,” he said.
