SEEKING VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH MAINTENANCE OF THE TWEED SECTION OF THE RAIL TRAIL
These marvellous volunteers call themselves the “Wednesday Warriers” and love the work they do on the Grand Ridge Rail Trail in Victoria. They feel a need to support the local town of Mirboo and what a great support they are!
We are asking individuals or groups to contact us now if they think they would like to volunteer in the future. Maintenance is a big issue for any rail trail and volunteers are always a great asset. Communities need to feel they “own” their trail and volunteering is a great way to feel pride in your trail.
We have had a number of groups contact us already so have started a data base for future use. Please email us if you are interested in helping and let us know if you have any particular skills or interests eg landcare, building, management skills, weeding or general labouring.

UPDATE ON THE TWEED SECTION OF THE TRAIL
After receiving the funding for the section between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek, Tweed Council have been working very hard to finalise proceedings before the anticipated commencement of work early next year.
Issues that still need to be looked at are the change in legislation, governance and maintenance funding.

Tweed Valley Mountain Bike Riders have submitted a development application to Council to make this site a legal mountain bike trail.
Mountain bike tracks are a great adjunct to any rail trail and will easily accessible from the corridor. They are also becoming a terrific drawcard for tourism as the one in Derby Tasmania has recently shown us. https://www.facebook.com/b

Update on Casino / Eltham section of the trail
Our wonderful engineers from NRRT have examined and assessed all the bridges from Casino to Mullumbimby completely pro-bono and we are extremely grateful for all the hard work they have put in. It appears that a lot of the old tressle bridges are in a very bad state making it difficult to keep and use them. Their heritage value is recognised however, and all attempts will be made to keep some for that reason.
Richmond Valley Councils have agreed to give $15,000 and Lismore has $15,000 in it’s budget (the budget will now go out to exhibition). This will go towards the business case which will be primarily funded by last year’s crowd funding campaign.
Work has commenced on the Ecological and Heritage Assessment, which will be paid for by the www.foundation grant received last year. This, as well as the engineering reports, will form part of the business case documents.

We spend money monthly on maintaining the website, mail chimp, facebook, markets, printing, postage and merchandise. We use our own money for travel and petrol and many other incidentals.
We want to try and not eat into the crowd funding money which has been earmarked for the business case.
