UPDATE ON TWEED SECTION OF THE RAIL TRAIL

A heritage consultant was commissioned in July to undertake several localised heritage management plans with the first work, a heritage conservation management plan and precinct plan for the Murwillumbah Railway Station now in final draft form for review and adoption by the Council.
An addendum to the Tweed Valley Rail Trail Business Case that updated the estimated operational and maintenance costs, was forwarded to Dept. of Premier and Cabinet for review. NSW Depts. are now debating which agency is best placed to “own ” and govern the railway corridor.
Local Land Services were commissioned in June to prepare a Biosecurity Risk Management Plan and this work is underway with key stakeholder industry groups being consulted ahead of adjoining landowner consultation occurring.
Documentation for a prospective tenderer expression of interest (EOI) has been prepared and the public tender process is now pending the completion of a funding agreement between NSW and the council.
A planning proposal seeking targeted amendments to the Tweed LEP 2014 to provide a single and consistent approvals pathway for the rail trail has recently completed its public exhibition and with only two public submissions received. A final report will now be considered by the Council prior to it being reported to the Department of Planning and Environment for the LEP Amendment to be made.
Public information sessions are being held in Murwillumbah, Stokers Siding, Burringbar, Mooball and Crabbes Creek, as part of the Tweed Council’s public consultation on its draft Open Space Strategy. Further details on the exhibition venues is available on the Council’s web site:

Leycester Creek BridgeThe Bridge over Leycester Creek is in a pretty bad way and will need some major work doing soon if we are to save it! It is heritage listed so even more reason to try and get some funding to save it. Our petition to help save the bridge is well underway. Please make contact at enquiries@
We have been liaising with councillors from Lismore who are very supportive.
It seems that any design work for alterations to or removal of embankments in South Lismore, as a result of flood modelling for mitigation, must also consider gradients for the Rail Trail.

Exploring Amsterdam by bike. There are twice as many bikes in Amsterdam as there are people. Bikes have total right of way. Old people, young people, commuters, tourists, cargo bikes transporting goods (or kids!).Build a safe place for walking and cycling and people will come!

If everyone can make a small donation to help keep our organisation running, it would be a great help. We spend money monthly on maintaining the website, mail chimp, facebook, markets, printing, postage and merchandise. We use our own money for travel and petrol and many other incidentals.
We want to try and not eat into the crowd funding money which has been earmarked for the business case.
